Lasix Generic
Our body expels excess water, salt, calcium, and other molecules through urine, but when these are retained in the body due to some disorder, it causes edema [swelling] in that or some other organ or tissue, creating severe complications in those body parts. Lasix is a powerful loop diuretic, or "water" pill which helps to get rid of the extra water and salt from the body.
While water, salt, and other small molecules are filtered out of the blood into the tubules of the kidney, most of these get reabsorbed into the blood before the filtered fluid flows out as urine. Generic Furosemide in Lasix successfully blocks the reabsorption process, which results in diuresis - an increased outflow of urine. The word, "Lasix", is said to be representative of the duration of the effect of this medicine - 6 hours. It can be taken orally, or injected; when taken orally, it takes an hour to take full effect, but when injected, it peaks in 5 minutes.
People may suffer from edema because of nephrotic syndrome, cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, hypertension, cerebral or pulmonary edema, problems with their lymph nodes, and all such patients require the assistance of a loop diuretic. In emphysema or chronic bronchitis, heart vessels going from the heart to the lungs are under a strain to pump sufficient amount of blood, which causes swelling in the feet and legs. Sometimes, fluid may collect in the lungs, and cause congestive heart failure, a severe heart attack or arrhythmias, pericardial effusion, or extreme hypertension. Excess accumulation of water in the intracellular or extracellular spaces in the brain can cause cerebral edema. This can be a life-threatening condition, when the water crosses the blood-brain barrier, entering the white matter in the brain, and can penetrate the grey matter, as well.
Pregnant women are prone to swelling in the legs when tiny valves inside the veins of their legs become weak and cannot carry the blood back easily from the legs to the heart. Exposure to the sun can also result in edema, as can standing or sitting for long hours. Untreated myeloma can cause bone breakdown and release calcium in the blood that results in hypercalcemia, which, in turn, can result in acute or chronic renal failure.Hypercalcemia is also treated with a loop diuretic like Furosemide.
Diabetes and Hepatitis B are capable of seriously impacting the kidneys, causing secondary hypertension. Diseases of the adrenal glands can also cause hypertension, while coarctation of the aorta - a rare hereditary disorder prevalent in children - leads to hypertension in children. Hypertension itself, when it becomes a chronic condition, can cause serious damage to various organs, resulting in enlargement of the heart, hardening of arteries, brain damage, stroke, kidney failure, or changes in the retina.
In all such conditions, there is urgent need for diuresis, but for patients with hepatic cirrhosis, ascites, or hypertension, it is safest for the diuresis to be given in the hospital, as sudden and extreme outflow of urine may cause dehydration, for which timely treatment can be provided in the hospital. Lasix cannot cure hypertension, but is useful in controlling it.
Generic Lasix should be taken as prescribed by your physician, once or twice a day, and Lasix is available in 20mg, 40mg and 80mg tablet formulations. It is recommended that you fix a regular schedule for the medicine. If you are taking it once a day and forget to take it at the scheduled time, take it as soon as you remember; but if you have to take it twice daily and miss a dose, you can take the missed dose if there is plenty of time for the next dose. Overdose of Furosemide can result in dehydration. Never increase the dose on your own. It gives quick relief, but the full therapy must be taken for deriving full advantage from the medicine. This medicine has to be stored at a room temperature between 15oC-30oC, away from heat, light and dampness.
An interesting aspect of Furosemide is that a chance discovery by veterinary doctors in the early 1970s’ led to Furosemide being used to treat racehorses, as it was found to prevent bleeding from their nostrils! According to rules, horses that bleed thrice from the nose are barred from racing, to prevent further injury to them. Like humans, horses that suffer from congestive heart failure or pulmonary edema are also treated with Lasix!
